We decided to rent a car from Christchurch to do the rest of the South Island since we would be coming back to ChCh to catch our flight to Sydney...decided to head down to Dunedin on our way to Queenstown and then to the Milford Sound/Fiordland area.
Dunedin was a lovely college town and we found a couch surfing host who turned out to be one of the gardeners from the Botanical Gardens there. It rained and/or was cloudy our whole time there but we still found things to do and places to see. Our first day, we went to the Otago museum and the public art gallery there and our second day we drove out to the Otago Peninsula.
We walked on a few cool tracks on the peninsula and saw quite a few very large, sleeping sea lions. The whole peninsula was gorgeous; a perfect mixture of rolling hills, adorable lambs and sheep, and beautiful turquoise coast.
We couchsurfed with a lovely young woman named Kate who had recently bought a house; she was a gardener for the native New Zealand garden at the botanical gardens in Dunedin.
